Kingsway Tram Subway

I have walked up and down Southampton Row on numerous occasions, as it is a direct walking route from Euston, when I travel by London Overground, to the River Thames. The road and pavements are always busy as Russell Square, Queen Square, the University of London and much more are all in the area.

As you cross the busy Theobalds Road, there is a ramp, behind iron gates, that slopes down into a tunnel, in the middle of the road. This is the only surviving entrance to the Kingsway Tram Subway.

Unlike the rest of the tram network, which ceased operation in 1952, the Kingsway Tram Subway still has the street tracks, for the most part, in situ. Looking closer you can make out the underground electricity cable that powered this route.

Although Southampton Row hasn't really changed that much, over the last century, you can immediately spot a problem with the layout. The roads would have been quieter, granted, but passengers would have to cross to the centre of the road, where stairs would need to be descended to reach the station below. And those exiting the tunnel would climb a different set of stairs, only to find themselves fighting to cross the road to the safety of the pavement.

Since I still had some time off, before heading back to work, I decided to take Erin and Keilyn to London. Keeping our exact destination a secret from them we travelled, via London Underground, to Piccadilly Circus, where we stopped for some lunch, which we ate in the grounds of St Anne's church, Soho.

Suitably filled we continued along Shaftesbury Avenue to Charing Cross Road, where we turned left heading for Old Compton Street. Or, in fact, a grate in a traffic island through which you can peer down into a utility tunnel and make out a worn sign saying 'Little Compton Street'.

We then headed down Earlham Street to Seven Dials, before heading along Mercer Street to Long Acre. From here we headed along Drury Lane and various other roads, which lead us to Covent Garden. A little perusal around the various market stalls before heading to our true destination... London Transport Museum.

With our timed entry tickets we didn't have to queue and were ushered in within minutes of arrival. Taking the lift to level 2, we began our journey though London's transport history. But, that is a story for another time. This story is all about the Hidden London Exhibition, within the London Transport Museum.

The Exhibition began by entering a 'disused' underground station and the paraphernalia that you find within the entrance, before leading you through the history of the closed stations. Why they were closed, how they were repurposed and, sometimes, their top secret use throughout the years.

A Blast from the Past

A rare sight on the Metropolitan Line, this afternoon, a beautifully restored 1938 art-deco train, that was used on the Bakerloo, Northern and Piccadilly lines.

It had begun its journey from Ealing Broadway and headed to Hammersmith, High Street Kensington and then a full circuit of the Circle Line before arriving at Moorgate.

It then ran from Moorgate, along the Metropolitan Line, to Amersham, before returning to Ealing Broadway, via Rayners Lane.

We waited for it at Rickmansworth where we were in the perfect place to see it.
