Its caramel-coloured tiles and leaded windows give the building an appealing look, especially in this area on the south bank.
Inside, the pub is not overly lit, which, along with its dark wood panelling, harkens back to days of old.
There is a large bar offering a wide selection of drinks, while meals can be ordered to be eaten at the various tables.
Or, you can head down the large curved staircase to the Debtor's Bar and enjoy your drink and meal in one of the old 'prison cells', now turned into comfortable booths.
Brief History
The Southwark Tavern was built in the 1800s, possibly established in 1864, and is a splendid Victorian pub.
It's interior includes Georgian décor along with more contemporary touches that include an open fire for those chilly winter evenings
The Debtor's Bar and Cellar Booths, downstairs, are more secluded and offer a more intimate space to enjoy the offerings of the pub.
This bar is possibly named for the Marshalsea Debtor's Prison, which was close to this location.
Now, Southwark has been home to at least five prisons, over the centuries, but I don't believe any were situated at this location. Besides, the 'cells' appear too large and modern, with the bricks being the same as those used throughout the pub.
Still, it is an interesting place to visit and wonder at the history of the area.
