South Bank Lion

Shining white against a black night.

Crossing Westminster Bridge, heading south, you will be met with a sculpture of a White Lion, standing on a plinth beside County Hall. 

The lion has been there since 1966, although, as it turns out, it is much older than it appears. 

An inscription on one of the lion's paws reads... 'WFW Coade 24 May 1837'.

William Frederick Woodington was a sculptor at the Royal Academy's School of Sculpture and used Coade Stone, a ceramic material, to sculpt the lion in 1837.

The lion sculpture once adorned the top of the Lion Brewery, which stood roughly where the Royal Festival Hall now stands today.

I have visited The County Hall, to see the London Aquarium, The London Dungeon and other attractions housed within the building, but I had never stayed in this iconic location. So I was over the moon when Emma booked us in to the Premier Inn for the night, during a recent trip to London.

Most of the building is private property, but if you speak nicely to security, and the building isn't too busy, you can go into the main foyer for a quick look around.

Besides that, the building is pretty much off limits to the public. Still, it was great to see inside areas not normally accessible and the view from the hotel room wasn't too bad, either.

At night the entire front of the building is lit up, making for a striking light display.

Having never visited Battersea Park, I couldn't wait to see the place for myself. It was a warm Spring afternoon when I finally reached my destination, where I took many photographs, from various angles. But, in the end, it was the image above, which was the first one I took, that I liked the most. The light and vibrancy of the colours really gave the area a serene feel, considering the bustle of joggers, dog walkers and fitness fanatics that were all around me.
