'The Shared' and 'Cornerstone' by Austin Emery

The Shared by Austin Emery
'The Shared' (2014).

'The Shared' was a collaboration between the sculptor Austin Emery, Leathermarket JMB (Southwark's largest resident-managed housing organisation), and the local community.

In October 2012 free, open stone sculpting workshops took place on Tyers Estate, with over 100 members of the public, both adult and child alike, creating their own pieces of sculpture.

To make the sculpture whole, much like a community, Austin Emery joined the pieces together to form 'The Shared' totem-like sculpture, which now stands on the Tyers Estate.

Austin then added his own embellishments and crafted animal habitats within the piece.

'Cornerstone' (2020).

'Cornerstone' was a collaboration between the sculptor Austin Emery and the community.

In October 2013, free, open stone carving workshops took place, on the Whites Grounds Estate, with over 100 members of the public, both adult and child alike, creating their own pieces of sculpture.

Austin then combined the various pieces into this collective 'Cornerstone' sculpture, which now stands on the corner of Tanner Street Park.

The materials.

Both 'The Shared' and 'Cornerstone' are made from Bath, Portland and other Limestones and marble.

The sculptures also incorporate bones, recovered from the River Thames, Victorian brickwork from the demolished arches at London Bridge, and reclaimed heritage from Southwark Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

They are peculiar, yet intriguing, sculptures that deserve to be explored, as they have so many different aspects to them. Each carving is unique and depicts animals, skulls, random shapes and the occasional cartoon character.

'The Shared' can be found on Carmarthen Place, Tyers Estate.

'Cornerstone' can be found on the corner of Bermondsey Street and Tanner Street.
