Wandering, as I do, I discovered this spaceship-like metal sculpture, near Nine Elms.
Affixed to its side is a small plaque that reads:
SKYSTATION
51°28'57"N
PETER NEWMAN
0°08'11"W
2015
Besides this there is no explanation as to what this sculpture represents, or is for.
After some research I discovered that 'Skystation' is a sculpture that also acts as public seating. Its contours are designed so people recline on it, offering a different perspective of the area that they are in.
Unfortunately, on my visit, it was a damp day, so I never got to sit, or lie, on it.
Peter Newman, the sculptor, was inspired by the LC4 chaise-longue, by Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret, which reflected the modernist idea that 'form follows function'.
There are three 'Skystations', with this one at Nine Elms, another at Adams Place in Canary Wharf and the third in the Museum for Modern Art, Luxembourg.
